Good Samaritan, Beaumont Police Officer Rescue Child and Driver From Burning Vehicle

BEAUMONT, Texas – A Good Samaritan and a Beaumont Police officer helped rescue a small child and a driver from a burning vehicle Friday morning after police say a medical emergency caused the vehicle to crash into a wooded area.

Beaumont Police responded to the 2100 block of South Major Drive at approximately 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 14 following a vehicle crash.

When the first officer arrived, the vehicle’s engine compartment was already on fire.

A man who witnessed the crash had stopped to help and was reaching through the vehicle’s broken rear window in an effort to free a small child who was strapped into a car seat.

The responding officer gave the Good Samaritan a knife to cut the child free from the car seat. Working together, the two were able to safely pull the child through the back window and away from the burning vehicle.

The officer then broke the driver’s side window to gain access to the driver.

Beaumont Fire-Rescue responded to the scene and extinguished the vehicle fire.

Police Say Medical Emergency Led to Crash

Investigators determined that the driver experienced a medical emergency before the crash, causing the vehicle to leave the roadway and travel into a wooded area.

Both the driver and the child were transported to a local hospital for evaluation. Police said neither appeared to have suffered injuries in the crash or fire.

The Beaumont Police Department praised the unidentified Good Samaritan for immediately stepping in when he saw the occupants in danger.

Police said his quick actions, combined with the responding officer’s efforts, helped get both the child and driver safely out of the vehicle during a potentially dangerous situation.
