Austin Hit-and-Run Suspect Identified Through DNA From Airbag, Arrested Months After Crash

AUSTIN, Texas – A 20-year-old man accused of fleeing a crash that injured two people in Austin has been arrested after detectives used DNA recovered from the vehicle’s deployed airbag to identify him, according to Austin Police.

Kevin Eduardo Aguilar Yac was arrested without incident on Tuesday, Aug. 11. Police had previously obtained a warrant for his arrest and asked the public for help locating him.

The case stems from a hit-and-run collision that occurred more than seven months earlier.

At approximately 6:28 p.m. on Dec. 28, 2025, Austin Police responded to a collision near the intersection of East Riverside Drive and Royal Crest Drive.

Investigators said Aguilar Yac rear-ended a vehicle occupied by two people. Both occupants suffered injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Instead of remaining at the scene, the driver allegedly fled immediately following the collision.

DNA From Driver-Side Airbag Leads to Suspect

Detectives investigating the crash recovered DNA evidence from the driver-side airbag of the suspect vehicle.

Forensic analysis of that evidence produced a match through the Combined DNA Index System, commonly known as CODIS, according to APD.

The DNA match allowed investigators to identify Aguilar Yac as the suspected driver.

Detectives subsequently obtained an arrest warrant for the 20-year-old and sought assistance locating him.

On Aug. 11, Austin Police officers located Aguilar Yac and took him into custody without incident.

The case highlights how DNA evidence recovered during the investigation of a traffic collision can be used to identify a suspected driver months after an alleged hit-and-run.
