Car Chase Unfolds in Beaumont, Culminating in Best Buy Parking Lot Scuffle and Freeway Arrests
On Friday, January 12, 2024, at 12:04 p.m., a Beaumont Police Department (BPD) Patrol Officer responded to an alert regarding a stolen black Dodge Charger traveling westbound on E. Lucas. The officer, traveling eastbound, initiated a traffic stop, but the driver evaded, leading to a pursuit that concluded in the Best Buy parking lot.
In the parking lot, the passenger exited the stolen vehicle and attempted to escape on foot but was promptly apprehended. Meanwhile, the driver continued to evade, colliding with two vehicles in the parking lot before eventually stopping on the access road near IHOP. The driver fled on foot across the freeway, where law enforcement successfully apprehended him near Target.
Subsequent investigation revealed that the Dodge Charger had been stolen in a carjacking incident in Humble the day before. BPD’s Auto Theft and Persons Crimes Detectives collaborated with Humble PD, conducting interviews with the suspects. The suspects, identified as 22-year-old Jamykel Phillips and 21-year-old Dezmond Spencer, both Beaumont residents, now face charges related to the incident.
Phillips is charged with Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, Evading in a Motor Vehicle, and Evading on Foot. Spencer faces charges of Evading on Foot. Both suspects were transported to the Jefferson County Jail.
