Two Arrested in Beaumont After Toddler Suffers Serious Injuries, Police Say

BEAUMONT, Texas — Two individuals have been arrested following an investigation into serious injuries sustained by a 2-year-old child, according to the Beaumont Police Department.
Officers were notified on April 8, 2026, after the child was taken to a Beaumont hospital with a severe injury. Due to the extent of the injuries, the child was later transferred to a Houston-area hospital for specialized care.
During medical treatment, healthcare providers identified additional concerns and notified law enforcement and Child Protective Services.
Detectives with the department’s Special Crimes Unit launched an investigation that included interviews, forensic examinations, and coordination with medical professionals and a Child Advocacy Center.
Investigators determined that Christopher Elam was the sole caregiver present when the injury occurred and concluded the injuries were not accidental. A warrant was issued for injury to a child causing serious bodily injury, and Elam was taken into custody and booked into the Jefferson County Jail.
Further investigation led to the arrest of the child’s mother, Laquarius Living. Authorities said her actions contributed to delays in both the investigation and the child receiving medical care. She was also charged with injury to a child causing serious bodily injury and booked into the Jefferson County Jail.
The investigation remains ongoing.
