Officer Loses Finger in Assault at El Paso Detention Facility
On February 6th, 2024, an incident occurred at the El Paso County Detention Facility where an officer was assaulted during the booking process of 37-year-old Devorise Antoine Newson.
According to reports, officers were in the midst of booking Newson when he became confrontational with the presiding judge. As a result, officers escorted him out of the room.
Later, while attempting to change Newson’s handcuffs, he resisted their commands, leading to a struggle.
During the altercation, Newson bit one of the officers’ fingers. In response, the officer used force to protect himself, resulting in injury. The injured officer, a 5-year veteran of the El Paso Police Department, was transported to the hospital for medical attention.
Despite efforts by medical staff, it was determined that the amputated portion of the officer’s finger could not be reattached. Consequently, Newson faces an additional charge of Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer, with a bond of $200,000 set by Judge Acosta.
