Suspect Killed After Exchange of Gunfire With Sweetwater Police Officers

SWEETWATER, Texas — An 18-year-old man was killed early Monday after multiple exchanges of gunfire with Sweetwater police officers during an incident that began when an officer’s patrol vehicle was struck by gunfire.
According to the Sweetwater Police Department, the incident occurred at approximately 2:20 a.m. on June 15, 2026, while officers were conducting routine patrol.
Police said an officer’s vehicle was struck by gunfire, prompting officers to return fire. The suspect then fled the area on foot.
Authorities later identified the suspect as 18-year-old Airick Iriarte.
Officers located Iriarte a short time later hiding behind a vehicle under a residential carport. Additional officers responded to the scene, where a second exchange of gunfire occurred.
Iriarte was pronounced dead at the scene.
No officers were reported injured during the incident.
In accordance with department policy, the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
The case has been turned over to the Texas Rangers, who will conduct an independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
The Sweetwater Police Department said no additional information is being released at this time.
Officials also thanked the Nolan County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Department of Public Safety for their assistance during the incident and subsequent investigation.
The investigation remains ongoing.
