One Dead, 10 Injured After Active Shooter Incident in Midland; Suspect Found Dead

MIDLAND, Texas — One person was killed and 10 others were injured after an active shooter incident Friday morning in Midland that ended with the suspect being found dead inside a barricaded building, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

At approximately 8 a.m. on June 12, 2026, DPS, the Midland Police Department and multiple local, state and federal law enforcement agencies responded to reports of an active shooter in the 4600 block of West Wall Street.

Authorities identified the suspect as 45-year-old Victor Mata Villarreal of Odessa.

Preliminary information indicates that when officers arrived, Villarreal opened fire on law enforcement officers and bystanders before barricading himself inside an abandoned veterinary clinic.

Responding officers immediately established a perimeter around the building to contain the threat and protect the public.

After a standoff lasting several hours, officers entered the building and located Villarreal deceased at approximately 12:30 p.m.

DPS confirmed that one victim was killed and 10 others suffered injuries during the incident. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims or the extent of their injuries.

No law enforcement officers were injured.

Investigators said Villarreal had been wanted for Attempted Capital Murder of a Peace Officer stemming from an incident on June 10, 2026, when he allegedly fired multiple shots at a Midland police officer during a vehicle pursuit.

At the request of the Midland Police Department, the Texas Rangers have assumed responsibility for the investigation.

Authorities are asking anyone with information related to the shooting to contact investigators.

The area remains an active crime scene. West Wall Street (Business 20) between Fasken Road and Loop 250 is expected to remain closed for the next 24 to 48 hours as investigators process evidence and continue their investigation.

No additional information has been released at this time.
