Lubbock Police K-9 Escapes, Attacks Two People Before Being Shot

The Lubbock Police Department (LPD) is investigating an incident where one of its K-9s escaped from its handler’s backyard and subsequently attacked two citizens in the 5700 block of 108th Street in South Lubbock.
Officers responded to a call about the dog attack just after 8:30 a.m. During the incident, a citizen intervened and shot and killed the attacking animal, which was later identified as an LPD K-9.
Shortly after the attack was reported, an off-duty Lubbock Police officer contacted dispatch to report that his police K-9 was missing from his yard. It was later confirmed that this was the same K-9 involved in the attack.
Two individuals were transported to University Medical Center; one sustained serious injuries, and the other received moderate injuries. Lubbock Animal Services also responded to the scene.
The LPD has placed the K-9’s handler on administrative leave while a full and thorough review of the incident is conducted. The department stated that it takes this matter seriously and is committed to accountability. Their priority is community safety, and they are working to understand the circumstances of the escape and attack to prevent future occurrences. The investigation is ongoing.
