Driver Sentenced to 10 Years Community Supervision for Intoxicated Manslaughter in Fatal 2021 Crash
Leonel Torres, 24, pled guilty to two counts of Intoxicated Manslaughter and was sentenced by an Ector County jury to 10 years of community supervision and a $10,000 fine for each count. The sentencing took place in the 358th Judicial District Court, where Judge Shrode also mandated that Torres serve 120 days in the Ector County jail as a condition of his probation.
The charges stemmed from a tragic incident on September 5, 2021, when Torres, intoxicated at the time of the crash, lost control of his vehicle. Both of his passengers were ejected from the car. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while the second victim was transported to the hospital, where they later succumbed to their injuries. Multiple witnesses confirmed that Torres was the driver when the fatal crash occurred.
The prosecution, led by Assistant District Attorneys Gregory Barber and William Prasher, expressed their gratitude for the diligent work of their trial team, which also included Investigator Ismael Orosco, Victim Assistance Coordinator Lauren Tarpley, and Paralegal Izdel Nieto.
This case highlights the dangers of impaired driving and the devastating consequences it can have on innocent lives, but a 10 year probation sentence after two lives were lost has left a sour taste on many that were following this case.
