Teen Drowns in Flooded Retention Pond During Search Effort in Magnolia

MAGNOLIA, Texas — A 15-year-old boy died Tuesday evening after entering a flooded retention pond in Magnolia and failing to resurface, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded at approximately 6 p.m. on June 16, 2026, to the 30000 block of Turriff Circle following reports of a missing juvenile in a retention pond.
Preliminary information indicates a group of teenagers were playing near a construction roadway and an adjacent retention pond when the 15-year-old entered the water.
Authorities said the water quickly became deeper than the teen’s height, and he disappeared beneath the surface. Other juveniles at the scene immediately called 911.
The Magnolia Fire Department led the initial emergency response and coordinated dive operations. Multiple agencies assisted in the search effort, including the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Willis Fire Department, The Woodlands Fire Department and the Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management.
Search crews deployed boats, specialized dive teams and sonar equipment in an effort to locate the missing teen.
After an extensive search, responders located the juvenile underwater using sonar technology. He was recovered from the pond and pronounced dead at the scene.
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said detectives have opened a death investigation, which is standard procedure in drowning cases. Investigators have found no indication of foul play.
The identity of the teen is being withheld pending notification of extended family members.
The sheriff’s office expressed condolences to the family and urged residents to remain cautious around floodwaters.
Officials noted that retention ponds, drainage areas and floodwaters can become especially dangerous following periods of heavy rainfall, as water depths and conditions can change rapidly and unexpectedly.
The investigation remains ongoing.
