Harris County Chop Shop Raids Recover 4 Stolen Vehicles, 252 Stolen Parts

HOUSTON, Texas – A multi-agency operation targeting suspected illegal vehicle chop shops across Harris County resulted in the recovery of four stolen vehicles and 252 stolen vehicle parts and components, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

One man was also arrested during the operation, which involved search warrants at three locations connected to an ongoing investigation by the Sheriff’s Office Auto Theft Task Force.

At a location near Tidwell Road and the North Freeway, investigators recovered a stolen vehicle along with numerous parts and components linked to other stolen vehicles.

Deputies said a man attempted to run while officers were executing the search warrant but was quickly caught.

Investigators determined the man had an outstanding felony warrant. He was also charged with evading on foot and failure to identify as a fugitive. Authorities did not release his name.

At a second location on Sandydale Lane, detectives recovered a stolen Dodge Charger and Chevrolet Silverado along with additional stolen vehicle parts and components.

Investigators searching a third location near Hill Road and Airline Drive found numerous vehicle parts that were also confirmed to have come from stolen vehicles.

Detectives said dismantling stolen vehicles can make investigations considerably more difficult because identifying information may be spread across dozens of individual components.

“A lot of times they part these cars out, and each individual part has a serial number and some don’t,” HCSO Detective Jose Castellanos said. “When you separate all that, it is a lot harder to identify that as an actual stolen vehicle.”

Investigators must examine engines, transmissions, doors and other components individually to determine which vehicles they came from and whether they can be connected to other thefts and victims.

The operation involved the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Auto Theft Unit and SWAT, Texas Department of Public Safety Special Operations Group and Criminal Investigations Division, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office SWAT, Homeland Security SRT and the Houston Police Department Auto Theft Unit.

Detectives are continuing to identify the recovered components and match them to reported vehicle thefts. Investigators are also working to determine whether additional people or criminal activity can be connected to the three locations.
