Fatal Pedestrian Crash in El Paso: 69th Traffic Fatality of the Year

On November 17, 2023, El Paso Police investigators from the Special Traffic Investigations unit responded to a tragic incident in the 2100 block of Montana. The focus of their inquiry was a pedestrian crash that claimed the life of 33-year-old Humberto Escajeda.

Preliminary findings reveal that the incident occurred when 45-year-old Carlos Lopez of West El Paso was traveling eastbound on Montana. Having just passed the intersection of Willow and Montana, Mr. Lopez struck Mr. Escajeda, who was in the roadway. Unfortunately, Lopez was unable to see the pedestrian in time to prevent the collision.

Carlos Lopez responsibly remained at the scene and promptly notified the authorities. The investigation has identified the contributing factor in this collision as the pedestrian crossing in an undesignated area.

Humberto Escajeda was pronounced dead at the scene. This marks the 69th traffic fatality in El Paso this year, a concerning increase compared to the 64 reported at this time last year.
