50-year-old Woman Dies in Vehicle Collision With CapMetro Bus in Austin

A fatal collision occurred on Monday, December 11, 2023, at around 9:37 a.m., involving a sedan and a CapMetro bus in the 2700 block of East Highway 71 Westbound, according to the Austin Police Department (APD). Responding officers transported all occupants of the sedan to a local hospital, where 50-year-old Susana Barnes, a passenger in the sedan, succumbed to her injuries.

The driver of the CapMetro bus was also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The incident marks Austin’s 86th fatal crash of the year, resulting in a total of 89 fatalities in 2023. Comparatively, on the same date in 2022, there were 104 fatal crashes, leading to 108 deaths.

The investigation into the collision is ongoing, and details from the initial assessment may be subject to change.
