$227K in Suspected Cartel Cash Seized During Traffic Stop Near South Texas Border

SOUTH TEXAS — Authorities seized more than $227,000 in suspected criminal proceeds during a late-night traffic stop involving a vehicle traveling toward the U.S.-Mexico border, according to the South Texas Specialized Crimes and Narcotics Task Force.

The stop occurred around 11:30 p.m. May 6 when a task force agent pulled over a vehicle traveling from Houston to Matamoros, Mexico. During the roadside interview, investigators observed multiple indicators of potential criminal activity, which led to a search of the vehicle.

A second agent arrived to assist, and during the search, authorities located 10 vacuum-sealed bundles wrapped in duct tape concealed within the rear seat and back wall area of the vehicle.

Officials said a total of $227,398 in U.S. currency was recovered and seized.

Investigators determined the money was tied to proceeds from criminal activity and was intended for a cartel operating in Mexico.

Authorities said bulk cash smuggling remains a key method used by criminal organizations to fund drug trafficking, weapons purchases and other illegal operations.

Officials added that the seizure is part of ongoing efforts to disrupt those networks and prevent the use of South Texas highways as corridors for cartel activity.
