Texas A&M University System Leads State in Enrollment Growth
Fresh data from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board reveals that The Texas A&M University System outpaced other public university systems in the state, adding the highest number of students this academic year. The fall 2023 enrollment across the A&M System’s 11 universities reached 154,865 students, marking a notable increase of 5,850 students compared to the previous year.
Chancellor John Sharp expressed satisfaction with the results, stating, “These enrollment numbers are proof our commitment to making higher education both accessible and affordable is working. This is great news for the A&M System and great news for Texas.”
The University of North Texas System secured the second position with an enrollment increase of 2,499, bringing its total student count to 50,549. The University of Texas System followed in third place, with 1,940 more students, totaling 240,845 enrolled students.
Texas A&M University led with the highest numerical increase, adding 2,433 students, growing from 67,165 in 2022 to 69,598 in 2023. The A&M System claimed seven of the top 12 highest percentage increases in enrollment among public universities in Texas for the same period.
Texas A&M University-Commerce emerged with the highest percentage increase at 12.5%, growing from 10,754 students in fall 2022 to 12,094 in fall 2023. Other A&M System universities, including Texas A&M University-Kingsville, Prairie View A&M University, Texas A&M University-San Antonio, Texas A&M International University, TAMU, and Tarleton State University, also featured among the top 12 with substantial percentage increases.
The A&M System experienced an overall enrollment increase of 3.93%, outpacing the UT System, which saw a 0.8% increase. Public universities in Texas collectively reported a 1.7% increase in enrollment from fall 2022 to fall 2023, adding 11,140 students.
The broader higher education landscape in Texas exhibited positive growth, with an overall increase of 2.53% in enrollment, adding 37,808 students from fall 2022 (1,494,662) to fall 2023 (1,532,470). Public community and state colleges played a significant role in this growth, rebounding from post-pandemic losses and adding 23,736 more students in fall 2023 compared to fall 2022.
Blake Decker, associate vice chancellor of data science for The Texas A&M University System, commented on the encouraging data, noting that Texas exceeded the national average of a 2% increase in enrollment across all higher education sectors from fall 2022 to fall 2023.
