Man in Custody after SWAT Callout in North Lubbock

A man is in custody following a standoff in North Lubbock.

The Lubbock Police Department Communications Center was contacted at 5:24 p.m. on Saturday, April 22nd by an individual who stated a male was armed and threatening self-harm at a residence in the 3100 block of Auburn Street. The female caller was not in the home with the male subject.

Patrol officers responded to the scene and established a perimeter around the involved residence. Officers made contact with 38-year-old David Garcia. LPD SWAT and negotiators were requested at 5:41 p.m. to assist patrol with Garcia, who was armed and barricaded inside the residence.

During the standoff, Garcia discharged his firearm multiple times indiscriminately in the direction of officers outside the home.

Officers deployed chemical gas into the home throughout the call.

This standoff went on for eight hours, and Lubbock Police Department staff showed lasting patience bringing this situation to a peaceful end.

This incident was prompted after officers were called to Covenant Women and Children’s Hospital on April 20, 2023 in reference to the death of a two-month-old infant.

At the time, the circumstances of the death were unknown and a METRO callout was initiated.

Garcia was named as a suspect early on in the case.

Through the course of the investigation, investigators were able to determine that the infant had injuries consistent with abuse, and the death was believed to be criminal in nature.

An arrest warrant was obtained for Garcia for First-Degree Felony Aggravated Assault. Garcia was arrested for this warrant at the conclusion of the standoff, and additional charges related to the standoff are expected.

The investigation is still ongoing.
