Lufkin Police Officer Fatally Shoots Armed Woman Who Had Called 911

On the evening of December 27, 2023, at 6 p.m., a Lufkin Police officer responded to a call at Great Oaks Apartments located at 3205 Old Union Road. The call reported an incident involving two males kicking an apartment door. The caller, who notified dispatch approximately five minutes after the incident, was unsure of the suspects’ whereabouts.

Upon receiving the call, the officer was dispatched to the scene, and a uniformed patrol officer arrived shortly thereafter. The officer scanned the area for the suspects while en route to the caller’s apartment. Upon reaching the apartment, the officer rang the doorbell and distanced themselves to continue surveying the surroundings.

To the officer’s surprise, the door opened a few seconds later, revealing an armed woman who was yelling, cursing, and advancing with a handgun aimed towards the officer. In response, the officer fired four shots and retreated as the armed woman was struck and collapsed at the end of a staircase, still in proximity to the firearm.

The officer notified dispatch of the shooting, secured the weapon, and began providing aid to the woman, including CPR, until paramedics arrived. Despite these efforts, the woman was pronounced dead at a local hospital shortly thereafter. The armed woman was later identified as the original caller, 26-year-old Aaliyah Anders of Lufkin.

The officer involved in the incident, 23-year-old Lauren Nick, did not sustain any physical injuries but will be on leave as per department policy during the investigation, which will be conducted by the Texas Rangers.

The incident remains under investigation, including the initial report of door-kicking, and authorities have released video footage from the officer’s body-worn camera and a doorbell security camera in an ongoing effort to maintain transparency.
