Father and Son Arrested for Stabbing in Brownsville After All-Night Party Altercation
On Sunday, July 7, 2024, at about 7:04 am, Cameron County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the 5700 block of Southmost Rd., in Brownsville, Texas, in response to a disturbance. While en route, deputies were informed that the situation had escalated to a stabbing and that the victim had left the location. Deputies responded with emergency lights and sirens and initiated a search for the suspects upon arrival.
Sheriff’s Investigators were called to the scene, and an investigation began. At about 9:12 am, deputies located and detained the suspects, identified as 36-year-old Jose Luis Villegas Rangel and his 16-year-old minor son. The investigation revealed that both suspects had been drinking all night with the victim at a nearby party. During the morning hours, a verbal altercation developed between Jose Luis Villegas and the victim. Villegas then started striking the victim on the face with his fists, and his son joined the assault. During the assault, both suspects produced knives and stabbed the victim several times in the chest and abdomen.
Both suspects were charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, a second-degree felony. The victim underwent emergency surgery due to life-threatening injuries and remains hospitalized.
