Fatal Shooting at 2000 Smith Street Under Review by Harris County Grand Jury
A fatal shooting occurred at 2000 Smith Street around 10 p.m. on Sunday (February 11), leading to the death of a male. The incident is set to be reviewed by a Harris County grand jury. The identity of the deceased is awaiting confirmation by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
The shooter, a 21-year-old male, emerged unscathed from the altercation. Houston Police Department (HPD) officers were alerted to the shooting and found that paramedics had transported the victim, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds, to Ben Taub General Hospital. The victim was pronounced dead upon arrival. Subsequently, officers responded to a 911 call from a nearby location, where the suspected shooter had reported the incident. The individual was apprehended, and the firearm used in the shooting was recovered.
Initial investigations suggest that the shooter had exited a restaurant and noticed another male trailing him. As he paused at a crosswalk, the other male approached him while allegedly wielding an ice pick and then lunged at him. Feeling threatened and believing he was facing a robbery attempt, the shooter drew his weapon and fired at the assailant.
Following protocol, the Harris County District Attorney’s Office was notified, and it has decided to present the case to a grand jury for further scrutiny.
