Fatal Shooting at Houston’s Lakewood Church Leaves Suspect Dead and Two Injured
Houston Police are investigating a fatal shooting incident that occurred at Lakewood Church on Sunday afternoon. The incident left one suspect dead and two individuals injured.
The suspect, identified as Genessee Moreno, 36, was wearing a trench coat when she entered the church along with a young child.
Upon entering the lobby, Moreno brandished a rifle and began firing shots. Off-duty Houston Police Officer C. Moreno, who was present at the location for an extra job, responded to the gunfire and engaged the suspect.
During the exchange of gunfire, an off-duty Texas Alcohol and Beverage Commission (TABC) officer also intervened. The suspect sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene by Houston Fire Department paramedics.
The juvenile male with the suspect, aged 7, was critically wounded and transported to a nearby hospital. Additionally, an adult male, aged 57, sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
Officer C. Moreno, who discharged his weapon during the incident, was unharmed. He has been with the Houston Police Department since January 2023 and is assigned to the HPD South Central Patrol Division.
The case is currently under investigation by the HPD Special Investigations Unit, the Internal Affairs Division, and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, as is customary in officer-involved shooting incidents within the city limits of Houston.
