Armed Standoff at Conroe McDonald’s Ends With Suspect in Custody After Two-Hour Negotiation

CONROE, Texas — An 18-year-old man was taken into custody Tuesday after a lengthy standoff with police outside a McDonald’s restaurant in Conroe, authorities said.
The incident began at approximately 2:12 p.m. on June 9 when Conroe Police Department officers were dispatched to the McDonald’s located at 1200 League Line Road in response to an active disturbance.
When officers arrived, they learned that a man later identified as Jeremiah Lawson was possibly experiencing a mental health crisis and having suicidal thoughts while sitting inside a vehicle in the restaurant’s parking lot.
Officers established contact with Lawson and attempted to persuade him to exit the vehicle peacefully. Police said Lawson was armed with several knives and repeatedly refused commands to leave the vehicle.
Due to the presence of weapons and Lawson’s refusal to comply, the Conroe Police Department activated its SWAT team and crisis negotiators.
During the standoff, Lawson allegedly made multiple statements indicating he wanted officers to shoot him and remained uncooperative while communicating with police.
After approximately two hours of negotiations, officers used less-lethal munitions to remove Lawson from the vehicle and take him into custody without further incident.
Police placed Lawson under an Emergency Detention Order and transported him to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment.
According to investigators, Lawson became combative while at the hospital and made violent threats toward Conroe police officers. The Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office subsequently accepted a charge of Retaliation, a third-degree felony, against Lawson.
Once medically cleared, Lawson is expected to be transported to the Montgomery County Jail.
Conroe Police Chief Buckholtz said officers were grateful the situation was resolved without additional escalation and that Lawson was safely taken into custody.
