Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Busts Suspect Selling Cloned Stolen Camaro Online

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX – The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) Auto Theft Task Force recently recovered a stolen vehicle and arrested a suspect attempting to sell it online, highlighting the risks of buying vehicles through internet marketplaces.
On Friday, November 14, 2025, investigators received a tip about a suspicious Facebook Marketplace listing advertising a 2022 Chevrolet Camaro LT1 as a low-mileage 2024 model for only $15,000—a price far below market value. The Auto Theft Task Force launched an investigation and quickly determined the car was “cloned,” meaning its true identity, often stolen, had been replaced with the VIN of a legitimate vehicle.
Task Force officers arranged a meeting with the seller in Montgomery and confirmed the vehicle was a cloned Camaro. Patrol units from District 5 assisted in detaining the suspect, who was later identified as Dillard Joseph Davis. Further investigation revealed the 2022 Camaro had been reported stolen through the Houston Police Department on October 7, 2025.
Davis was arrested and booked on felony charges of Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, a felony Auto Theft warrant, and multiple misdemeanor warrants. Both Sheriff Doolittle and the Auto Theft Task Force stressed the dangers of purchasing vehicles online, noting that buyers of cloned cars often lose both the vehicle and their money when the fraud is uncovered.
The Auto Theft Task Force, funded and trained in part by the Motor Vehicle Crimes Prevention Authority, continues to investigate similar cases and urges residents to exercise caution when buying vehicles through online platforms.
