Suspect Escapes Moving Patrol Car in Galveston County, Recaptured Hours Later in Santa Fe

A man who fled from deputies twice—once escaping from a moving patrol car—was recaptured after an extensive multi-agency search on March 15, 2025.
Initial Encounter and First Escape
Around 3 a.m., a Galveston County Sheriff’s deputy encountered a vehicle obstructing the roadway. As the deputy exited his patrol car, the suspect, later identified as 35-year-old Sylvester Andre Thompson, fled on foot.
At the same time, Dickinson Police Department broadcasted a burglary report in the area, describing a suspect matching Thompson’s description. A perimeter was established with assistance from League City PD, La Marque PD K9 unit, and Dickinson PD. Thompson was apprehended and arrested for evading arrest on foot.
Escape From Moving Patrol Vehicle
While being transported to jail, Thompson moved his handcuffs from behind his back to the front, rolled down the rear window of the moving patrol car, and jumped out.
A second foot pursuit ensued. During the struggle, Thompson assaulted the deputy and attempted to grab his weapon, leaving the deputy injured. Thompson then escaped on foot.
Manhunt and Final Arrest
After a multi-hour search, law enforcement agencies tracked Thompson to Santa Fe, where he was found still handcuffed in the passenger seat of a vehicle. The driver, Captain Lawson, and passenger, Ebonnie Lathon, were arrested and charged with Hindering Apprehension.
During the investigation, deputies learned Thompson claimed he had been involved in a domestic dispute with his girlfriend before the initial encounter with law enforcement.
The Galveston County Sheriff’s Office has launched a review of the incident and is encouraging community members to come forward with any information.
