Sudden Passion Argument Leads to Reduced Sentence in Austin Murder Trial
Adam Brown

A Travis County jury convicted 25-year-old Adam Brown of Murder on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, in connection with the death of 44-year-old Christopher Rodriguez. However, the jury agreed with the defense’s argument of “sudden passion” during the punishment phase, resulting in a reduced sentence of eight years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

The trial, which began with jury selection on April 7, 2025, heard testimony about an altercation that occurred on March 23, 2024. Brown and his girlfriend were walking their dogs when an argument ensued with Mr. Rodriguez after one of the dogs reportedly barked and lunged at him. According to court testimony, Mr. Rodriguez allegedly threatened to kill the dogs and retrieved a tree branch. Brown and his girlfriend retreated to their apartment but returned, with Brown armed with a gun and his girlfriend with a bat.

The confrontation continued, and Mr. Rodriguez threw the tree branch, missing Brown. Neighbors called 911, and one witness reported seeing Mr. Rodriguez unarmed in the grass when Brown shot him in the chest. The gunshot was reportedly audible on the 911 call.

Brown claimed self-defense, alleging threats with a knife, Mr. Rodriguez reaching for a rock, and sprinting towards him. However, the evidence presented contradicted this account.

Despite the murder conviction, the jury found sufficient evidence of “sudden passion,” which allowed them to reduce the punishment range from a first-degree to a second-degree felony, ultimately sentencing Brown to eight years.

Travis County District Attorney José Garza acknowledged the efforts of his staff and law enforcement partners, stating, “Our office is grateful to our dedicated staff and law enforcement partners who worked tirelessly to hold the defendant accountable and seek justice for the victim and his family. We hope this verdict continues to help the victim’s family with their healing journey.”
