Officer-Involved Shooting Under Investigation in Harris County; Woman Shot in Apparent Break-in
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) is actively investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place early morning on February 3, 2024.
At around 2:10 a.m., HCSO deputies responded to an “In Progress” call at 90 Uvalde Road (Pines of Woodforest Apartments), where a resident reported a potential break-in. Upon arrival at 2:14 a.m., the first deputy cleared the caller’s apartment, finding no intruder. However, a neighbor then informed deputies of a break-in at another nearby apartment.
Responding to the reported incident, deputies observed a broken window near the front door of the second apartment. They knocked, announcing their presence, and noticed a female inside approaching the door with a firearm. In response, two deputies discharged their duty weapons, striking the adult female. Immediate life-saving efforts were initiated, and North Channel Emergency Medical Services transported her to a local hospital.
Inside the apartment, deputies conducted a safety sweep and found no other individuals. A handgun, believed to be the same one observed in the female’s possession, was recovered.
The injured female is currently in stable condition at the hospital, with no other reported injuries. Investigators later revealed that she and another female had broken their own window to gain entry due to a lack of keys.
The two deputies involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave, following standard HCSO protocols. The ongoing investigation is being conducted by the Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit, with preliminary information subject to change as the inquiry progresses.
An independent investigation is being carried out by the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, while the HCSO Internal Affairs Division is conducting an additional administrative inquiry. All gathered evidence will be presented to an independent grand jury.
Pursuant to HCSO policy, relevant body-worn camera footage will be released within 45 days of the incident. Anyone with pertinent information is urged to contact the Harris County Sheriff’s Office at 713-221-6000.
