Lone Star College Receives $1.3 Million Skills Development Fund Grant, Boosting Workforce Training Across Multiple Industries

Governor Greg Abbott announced today that Lone Star College is set to receive over $1,329,329 in Skills Development Fund (SDF) grants from the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC). The funds will be allocated to provide specialized training for more than 650 employees across AmeriTex Machine & Fabrication, McCarthy Building Companies Inc., Memorial Hermann Northeast Hospital, and Tenaris. The training programs will focus on key industry areas, including construction, energy, healthcare, and machining.

In response to the announcement, Governor Abbott highlighted the importance of investing in workforce development programs as the Texas economy continues to expand. He emphasized that the SDF grants to Lone Star College will play a crucial role in equipping Texans in the Greater Houston area with the necessary skills to excel and progress in high-demand careers.

TWC Chairman Bryan Daniel emphasized the significance of the Skills Development Fund in supporting the state’s economy. He noted that the program facilitates a localized and market-driven approach to address workforce and business needs. Daniel praised Lone Star College for its commitment to providing programs that enhance the skills of employees, addressing critical and in-demand job requirements.

The Skills Development Fund is a vital component of the state’s workforce training grant program, aiming to assist businesses in upskilling both new and existing employees. Through collaboration with public community and technical colleges, workforce development boards, and the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service, TWC strives to deliver tailored and innovative training programs to businesses of all sizes across Texas.

Since its inception in 1996, the SDF grant program has successfully partnered with over 4,800 employers, contributing to the creation of more than 420,000 jobs and offering training opportunities throughout the state. The latest allocation of funds to Lone Star College underscores the ongoing commitment to fostering workforce development and meeting the evolving needs of Texas businesses.
