Houston Man Dressed As Security Guard Opens Fire on Deputy; Suspect Apprehended and Charged with Attempted Capital Murder

On January 4, 2024, at 2:04 am, Constable Precinct 4 Deputies responded to a call reporting the discharge of firearms at an apartment complex located at 12655 Kuykendahl, between W. Rankin and Demontrond. Upon arrival, deputies observed two males engaged in a verbal argument. As a deputy approached, one of the males fled the scene. The other male, not involved in the shooting incident, has not been located.

The fleeing male, wearing a distinctive security guard uniform, eluded the pursuing deputy within the complex. Additional units from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to search for the suspect. The male suspect reappeared between the apartments, brandishing a weapon, and fired 5 to 6 rounds at a deputy who took cover and called for assistance.

The suspect then barricaded himself inside one of the apartments, prompting the response of the SWAT team and crisis negotiators, as confirmed by Major J. Razo. During efforts to evacuate nearby residents, the suspect emerged from the apartment wearing pajamas, having changed out of his security uniform. He was detained at that point.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez identified the suspect as 24-year-old Jernard Brown and confirmed his arrest on charges of Attempted Capital Murder of a Peace Officer. Inside the apartment, the suspect was found with a female believed to be his girlfriend and a child. Although initially considered a barricaded situation, deputies clarified that the female and child were not hostages but present with the suspect.

Authorities exercised caution during the incident, and no injuries were reported.
