Historic Headstones Discovered at Tomball Construction Site, Investigation Underway

TOMBALL, Texas — Construction crews working at a redevelopment site in Tomball uncovered what appear to be historic cemetery headstones Tuesday morning, prompting city officials to secure the area while its historical significance is investigated.

According to the Tomball Police Department, officers responded at approximately 10:41 a.m. on June 30 to the 100 block of North Walnut Street after receiving a report of a possible historic cemetery.

The property is an active construction site where an older building was recently demolished.

While clearing debris, construction workers discovered what appeared to be historic cemetery headstones believed to date back to the early 1900s. The contractor immediately notified the City of Tomball, and the site was secured.

Authorities have locked down and fenced off the area while appropriate historical authorities are contacted to evaluate the discovery and determine the significance of the site.

The Tomball Police Department is working with the City of Tomball and representatives from the local historical society as the investigation moves forward.

City officials said they are committed to treating the site with the utmost respect, noting that it may contain the final resting place of individuals whose descendants are still living today.

Officials said every effort will be made to protect and preserve the site until its historical significance has been fully assessed.

Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
