Graphyte Partners with American Airlines for Major Carbon Removal Deal

Graphyte, a carbon removal startup supported by Breakthrough Energy Ventures, has secured American Airlines as its inaugural customer. The airline has committed to purchasing 10,000 tons of permanent carbon removal through Graphyte’s innovative Carbon Casting process, scheduled for delivery in early 2025.

Graphyte’s Carbon Casting method utilizes easily accessible biomass, efficient processing, and advanced monitoring to achieve quantifiable and permanent removal of carbon dioxide (CO2). Notably, this approach requires significantly less energy and incurs substantially lower costs compared to existing carbon removal methods.

Barclay Rogers, CEO of Graphyte, remarked, “This is a landmark agreement for both Graphyte and American Airlines. It demonstrates the growing demand for affordable and scalable high-quality carbon removal credits and the ability of Carbon Casting technology to make a significant impact in the fight against climate change in the very near term.”

American Airlines, with a long-term goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, is actively investing in various technologies to reduce its carbon footprint. While the focus remains on operational improvements, such as acquiring more efficient aircraft and utilizing sustainable aviation fuel, the airline recognizes the crucial role of carbon credits in addressing residual emissions. The collaboration with Graphyte aims to accelerate and expand the market for CO2 removal.

Jill Blickstein, Chief Sustainability Officer at American, stated, “Hard to abate industries like aviation will need high-quality, permanent, affordable, and scalable carbon credits — including removals — to achieve our emissions reduction goals. We are excited to work with Graphyte to help them scale their important new technology.”

The initial commercial-scale deployment of Carbon Casting is set to occur at a Graphyte facility in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Positioned at the intersection of major agricultural and timber production areas, the facility will leverage biomass byproducts, such as crop and wood residues, to create dense carbon blocks. These blocks will be wrapped in an environmentally safe polymer barrier and stored underground in a state-of-the-art facility, marking a significant step forward in the pursuit of sustainable and effective carbon removal solutions.
