Freeman Martin Named First Texas Ranger to Lead DPS as New Director
On November 20, 2024, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) announced the selection of Senior Deputy Director Freeman F. Martin as its fourteenth Director. Martin, 56, is the first Texas Ranger to ascend to the position.
The announcement follows the August 23 retirement notice of current DPS Director Steven C. McCraw, who will step down on November 30 after 15 years in the role. The Public Safety Commission (PSC) conducted a comprehensive search, with a subcommittee vetting candidates before unanimously selecting Martin.
Governor Greg Abbott expressed confidence in Martin’s appointment, praising his experience and commitment. “Freeman Martin is the right choice to lead the Texas Department of Public Safety and will be instrumental in ensuring the safety and security of Texans,” Abbott said.
PSC Chairman Steven P. Mach commended Martin’s three-decade tenure at DPS, noting his deep knowledge of the department and its needs.
Martin, a native of New Deal, Texas, reflected on the honor, stating, “For the past three decades, it has been a privilege to work alongside the dedicated individuals who embody the core values of this agency. The opportunity to lead this organization is the honor of a lifetime.”
Martin began his career with DPS in 1990 as a Texas Highway Patrol Trooper in Winnie and has held numerous leadership positions, including Texas Ranger Major and Deputy Director of Homeland Security Operations. His career highlights include leading responses to significant events like the Sutherland Springs mass shooting, Austin serial bombings, and Hurricane Harvey.
Martin will officially assume the role of Director on December 1 and will be sworn in during a special ceremony at DPS headquarters in Austin on December 2.
