Angelina County Sheriff’s Office Mourns Sudden Loss of Deputy Chad Murray

LUFKIN, Texas — The Angelina County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the unexpected death of Deputy Chad Anthony Murray, who died suddenly Thursday, June 24, 2026, at a local hospital. He was 54.

According to the sheriff’s office, Murray had served as a patrol deputy for the past four years after joining the department in June 2022.

Law enforcement was a second career for Murray. At age 50, he attended the Angelina College Law Enforcement Academy, graduated, and became a Texas peace officer before joining the sheriff’s office.

Sheriff’s officials described Murray as a dedicated public servant who had a strong desire to help others and make a positive impact on the community. They said he carried out his duties professionally and was known for his kindness, patience, and outgoing personality.

Before becoming a deputy, Murray worked for Brookshire Brothers, where he served as Director of Distribution and Transportation at the company’s warehouse, overseeing more than 200 employees.

The sheriff’s office said Murray was well respected by fellow deputies and staff and genuinely loved serving the community as a law enforcement officer.

He is survived by his wife, Emily, his son, Caleb, and other family members and friends.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 28, at Carroway Funeral Home in Lufkin.

Funeral services (View obituary) are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, June 29, at Harmony Hill Baptist Church in Lufkin.

The Angelina County Sheriff’s Office extended its condolences to Murray’s family, friends, and colleagues as they mourn his loss.
