Fatal T-bone Collision at Intersection of Gateway South and Sean Haggerty in El Paso

On August 18, 2023, the Special Traffic Investigations unit was called to the scene of a serious T-bone collision at the intersection of Gateway South and Sean Haggerty. The collision resulted in severe injuries to the individuals involved.

The initial investigation revealed that Timothy John Schevikhoven, 40, a resident of Amarillo, was driving southbound on Gateway South as he approached the intersection of Sean Haggerty. Simultaneously, Toan Thuan Duong, 40, hailing from Houston, was traveling eastbound in a Lexus and entered the same intersection. Unfortunately, due to the circumstances, a semi-truck was unable to stop in time, resulting in a collision that impacted the Lexus from the side.

The force of the impact caused the Lexus to move south of the intersection. Both drivers sustained injuries in the collision. Timothy John Schevikhoven suffered a broken rib and was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment. Toan Thuan Duong’s injuries were more severe, and he was rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.

On August 24, 2023, the Medical Examiner’s Office notified the Special Traffic Investigators that Toan Thuan Duong had succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the collision. The primary contributing factor to the crash was identified as a red light violation on the part of Toan Thuan Duong.

The fatality marked the 51st traffic-related death of the year, representing an increase compared to the same period last year when there were 46 fatalities.
