Bellaire Traffic Stop Uncovers Identity Theft Operation Affecting 250 Victims

BELLAIRE, Texas – A routine traffic stop in Bellaire led to the arrest of two individuals wanted on multiple felony warrants and the discovery of personal identifying information belonging to hundreds of potential identity theft victims.

According to the Bellaire Police Department, officers conducted a traffic stop at approximately 8 p.m. on June 1 after observing traffic violations.

The driver, identified as Wendy Meyers, was arrested on outstanding warrants for:

  • Possession of Identifying Information (Montgomery County)
  • Credit Card Abuse (Harris County)
  • Fraud (Guadalupe County)

The passenger, identified as Joel Johnson, was arrested on outstanding warrants for:

  • Burglary of a Habitation (Harris County)
  • Felony Criminal Mischief (Harris County)
  • Aggravated Assault of a Family Member (Harris County)

Johnson also faces a Failure to Identify/Fugitive from Justice charge filed by Bellaire police.

During the investigation, officers discovered personal identifying information belonging to approximately 250 victims inside the vehicle.

Investigators said the information included names, dates of birth, home addresses, Social Security numbers, and other sensitive personal data. As of Tuesday, officers had positively identified 128 of the victims.

Police also determined the vehicle being driven had allegedly been purchased using the stolen identity of one of the victims.

Authorities believe the discovery may be connected to a significant identity theft and fraud operation. Investigators are continuing to review the evidence and identify additional victims.

Bellaire police praised the work of the department’s night shift officers for uncovering the case.

“Outstanding work by our ‘C’ Night Shift officers for their thorough investigation and commitment to making the difference in our community,” the department said in a statement. “Their attention to detail helped uncover a significant identity theft operation and protect numerous victims from further harm.”

The investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges may be filed as detectives continue examining the evidence.
