Authorities Investigate Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting in Montgomery County
On March 11, 2023, around 8:00 p.m., Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Deputies rushed to the 26800 block of Interstate 45 to assist in the investigation of an officer-involved shooting that involved multiple law enforcement agencies.
The Houston Police Department, Harris County Sheriff’s Office, and Texas Department of Public Safety were jointly investigating a suspect linked to several robberies across Harris, Fort Bend, and Montgomery counties.
According to reports, the suspect was spotted at a liquor store located at the mentioned address, where officers witnessed him commit an aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon. When officers tried to apprehend the suspect, he disregarded commands and fled the scene. The pursuit led officers to the rear of the building, where the suspect brandished a firearm. Fearing for their safety, multiple officers discharged their firearms, fatally striking the suspect on the scene.
The deceased individual’s identity has not been disclosed pending notification of next of kin.
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Homicide and Violent Crimes Unit, in collaboration with the Texas Rangers and The Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office, will be leading the investigation into the shooting. Additionally, each agency involved in the incident will conduct its own administrative inquiry.
UPDATE: The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the identity of the deceased suspect is 44-year-old Roosevelt Overton Jr. from Houston, Texas. The investigation determined that Overton has been identified as a suspect in more than 20 robbery cases across Harris, Fort Bend, and Montgomery County.
