Arrest Made in Harlingen Following Gunshots and “Suicide by Cop” Threat

On Sunday, October 29, 2023, Cameron County Sheriff Deputies responded to a report of gunshots and a person threatening “suicide by cop” at a residence on the 4400 block of Teege Rd. Harlingen, Texas. The subject firing the handgun was identified as 29-year-old Jose Guadalupe Serrata Olivares, who was wanted out of Hidalgo County.

Upon arrival, Sheriff Deputies arrested Serrata Olivares after a brief struggle and discovered a loaded handgun magazine in his possession. Sheriff Investigators, with the homeowner’s consent, located a 9mm handgun inside the residence, spent casings outside, and home surveillance footage of the incident.

Investigations revealed that Serrata Olivares, convicted of a felony in 2022, was prohibited from possessing a firearm. Arrest warrants were secured, charging him with Deadly Conduct and Unlawful Possession of Firearm by Felon.

On January 9, 2024, Serrata Olivares was arrested by the Harlingen Police Department on unrelated charges. He faces charges of Deadly Conduct (Class A Misdemeanor) and Unlawful Possession of Firearm by Felon (3rd Degree Felony).
