Montgomery County Approves 64-Bed Jail Expansion Amid Rapid Population Growth

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office has secured unanimous approval from the Texas Commission on Jail Standards for a 64-bed jail expansion, a move aimed at addressing the county’s increasing population and ensuring public safety.
Sheriff Wesley Doolittle emphasized the significance of the expansion, stating, “This expansion is not simply about adding beds; it’s about upholding the rule of law. It ensures that those accused of violating our laws are held accountable and detained throughout the judicial process, safeguarding our citizens and upholding the principles of justice upon which our Constitution is built.”
Montgomery County’s population surged to 711,354 residents in 2023, marking a 14.6% increase since 2020. By the end of 2025, estimates suggest the county will surpass 750,000 residents, further straining law enforcement resources.
Sheriff Doolittle, along with Chief Deputy Zitzmann, Assistant Chief Deputy Hensley, and Captain Richards, presented the variance request to the Jail Commission in Austin, where it received full approval. The plan allows for cost-effective operational adjustments and minor construction modifications while maintaining compliance with state regulations.
“This administration is committed to fiscal responsibility while ensuring public safety,” Sheriff Doolittle said. “This expansion is a proactive approach to dealing with growth, maintaining high standards of safety and security, and ensuring that justice is served.”
The Sheriff’s Office collaborated with the District Attorney’s Office, the Commissioners Court, the Criminal and County Courts at Law, and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice to secure approval. Officials emphasized that these partnerships are essential in preserving Montgomery County’s values and way of life.
