Hit-and-Run Fatality in El Paso: Driver Arrested After Woman Ejected in Crash
El Paso Police responded to a two-vehicle crash on December 5, 2024, at approximately 10:01 PM on the 7300 block of North Loop. Upon arrival, officers found a 64-year-old woman who had been ejected from her vehicle. The Special Traffic Investigations unit was called in to assist with the investigation.
Preliminary findings revealed that the woman, identified as Irma Moreno from Millson Valley, was traveling eastbound on North Loop just after Hawkins when she attempted a U-turn to head west. At the same time, a 2006 Chevy Trailblazer, speeding westbound on North Loop, struck the woman’s Toyota Corolla. The impact caused Moreno to be ejected from the vehicle. The driver of the Trailblazer continued west until the vehicle became disabled past the Hawkins intersection, where the driver fled the scene on foot.
Moreno was transported to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. Authorities noted that speed on the part of the SUV and failure to yield on the part of the Toyota may have contributed to the crash.
On December 19, 2024, El Paso detectives identified 30-year-old German Duarte from West El Paso as the suspect in the hit-and-run and took him into custody. The investigation remains ongoing.
