Las Cruces Man Charged After Shooting Leaves Victim Critically Injured in El Paso

EL PASO, Texas – A 29-year-old Las Cruces man was arrested after a shooting in El Paso left another man critically injured, according to the El Paso Police Department.

Police said officers responded May 11 to the area of San Marcial and Durazno after receiving reports of a shooting.

When officers arrived, they found a 21-year-old Las Cruces man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to a local hospital and was last reported in critical condition.

Investigators with the department’s Crimes Against Persons Unit took over the case.

According to the preliminary investigation, a private event was taking place in the 300 block of North San Marcial when an altercation broke out between the victim and another attendee.

Police said the suspect produced a handgun and shot the victim before fleeing the scene.

Through the investigation, detectives identified the suspect as 29-year-old Javier Arroyo Gerardo of Las Cruces.

Gerardo was arrested the same day and booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Authorities said Judge R. Duke set Gerardo’s bond at $150,000.
