HOUSTON, Texas — One of two men charged in the fatal shooting of a 39-year-old man at a southwest Houston shopping center has been arrested, while the second suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound as authorities attempted to take him into custody.

According to the Houston Police Department, 22-year-old Axzey Mojica has been charged with murder in Fort Bend County in connection with the death of Sean Bree.

A second suspect, 23-year-old Iddris Umaru, was also charged with murder but died on June 13 after shooting himself as law enforcement officers attempted to arrest him.

The investigation began on June 6 when Houston police officers responded to a shooting call at approximately 1 p.m. in the parking lot of a strip center located in the 10055 block of Belknap Road in Sugar Land.

Officers arrived and found Bree suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Houston Police Department Homicide Division Detectives J. Smith and D. Toledo led the investigation and identified Umaru and Mojica as persons of interest. Further investigative work led detectives to identify both men as suspects.

Murder charges were filed against the pair on June 9.

On June 13, members of the U.S. Marshals Service Gulf Coast Violent Offender Task Force and the Houston Police Department’s Westside Patrol Crime Suppression Team located the suspects at a business in the 105 block of West Road.

Authorities said officers attempted to apprehend both men when Umaru produced a handgun and fatally shot himself.

Mojica was taken into custody without incident and remains jailed on the murder charge.

The investigation remains ongoing.
