Inmate Charged With Murder After Fatal Assault Inside Galveston County Jail

GALVESTON COUNTY, Texas — On Wednesday, April 29th, a 58-year-old inmate died after being assaulted by another inmate inside the Galveston County Jail, and authorities have filed a murder charge in the case, officials said.

Bessie Burgan was transported to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston following the incident and was later pronounced dead.

The Galveston County Sheriff’s Office said the suspect has been identified as Crystal Walker, 39, who was in custody at the time on a probation violation related to a controlled substance charge. Following a review of surveillance footage, witness interviews and consultation with the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office, Walker was charged with murder. Her bond has been set at $500,000.

Authorities said the Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the homicide. In accordance with Texas Jail Standards, the Texas Rangers are conducting an independent investigation into the in-custody death.

The Galveston County District Attorney’s Office responded to the scene and is assisting with the investigation.

Officials said the case remains ongoing.
