Man Dies After Hours-Long Standoff With Deputies in New Caney

NEW CANEY, Texas — A man died after an hours-long standoff with law enforcement at an RV park in New Caney on Tuesday, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded around 1:00 p.m. on April 14, 2026, to the 19000 block of FM 1485 after a bail bondsman reported a man refusing to surrender.
Authorities said the suspect opened the door of his residence armed with a pistol and would not comply. He then barricaded himself inside a camper trailer located within a densely populated RV park.
Investigators determined the man, identified as 66-year-old David Dobson of New Caney, had two active felony warrants out of Lavaca County.
Due to safety concerns, the sheriff’s office deployed its SWAT Team, Crisis Negotiation Team, and the Precinct 1 Constable’s Office Mental Health Unit to assist.
After several hours of negotiations, Dobson remained noncompliant. SWAT members eventually made entry into the trailer, where they found him suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Officers immediately began life-saving measures, and Dobson was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Major Crimes Detectives, the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office, and the Texas Rangers are continuing the investigation.
Officials said the incident is believed to be isolated, and there is no ongoing threat to the community.
