Man Dies After Altercation With Security Guard at Downtown Austin Bank

AUSTIN, Texas, March 11, 2026 — Austin police are investigating the death of a man following an altercation with a security guard at a downtown bank Wednesday afternoon.
Officers with the Austin Police Department responded at about 3:45 p.m. to a disturbance call at Plains Capital Bank located at 201 West 5th Street. When officers arrived, they spoke with security personnel and found a man lying on his back inside the building appearing to snore.
Police said officers attempted to make contact with the man but found him unresponsive. Officers began life saving measures until Austin Travis County Emergency Medical Services arrived. The man was pronounced dead at 4:46 p.m. His identity has not yet been released.
Homicide detectives and crime scene specialists responded to investigate.
According to the preliminary investigation, the man had previously entered the bank on several occasions and harassed employees. On Wednesday, security asked him to leave the building. During the encounter, the man, who was using a wheelchair, punched a security guard in the face.
Investigators said the guard struck the man back in self defense, causing him to fall to the ground.
Authorities said the man then stood up, gathered his belongings and picked up his wheelchair before lying back down on the floor, where officers and paramedics later found him.
The case was reviewed with the Travis County District Attorney’s Office, which determined the security guard acted in self defense. No charges will be filed.
Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the Austin Police Department or submit a tip through Capital Area Crime Stoppers.
Officials said the case is being investigated as Austin’s 15th homicide of 2026.
