Self-Defense Claimed in Fatal Houston Shooting; Case to Go Before Grand Jury

A fatal shooting that occurred in the Golfcrest/Bellfort/Reveille area on Tuesday, June 3, around 5:30 a.m., will be referred to a Harris County grand jury. A woman was shot and killed in the incident on Golfway Street. Her identity is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

According to HPD Homicide Division Sergeant J. Brooks and Detective C. Flora, patrol officers responded to a shooting report at 7100 Golfway Street and found an unresponsive female in the roadway with multiple gunshot wounds. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene.

A preliminary investigation indicates that a 34-year-old male experiencing homelessness was sleeping in a makeshift bed when the woman approached him with a large stick, brandishing it as a club. She then stole his backpack, which contained all his personal belongings. Fearing for his safety, the man retrieved a firearm and fired as the woman ran away with the backpack. The female collapsed, and the male then retrieved his backpack and used a phone from it to call 911.

The shooter remained at the scene and has been cooperative with investigators. After consulting with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, it was determined that the case will be presented to a grand jury for review. The male shooter was not injured in the incident.
