Laredo Man Sentenced to 21 Years in Federal Prison After $80 Fentanyl Deal Leads to Fatal Overdose

LAREDO, Texas — A 34-year-old Laredo man has been sentenced to 21 years in federal prison for his role in a fentanyl distribution conspiracy connected to the overdose death of another man at a Laredo hotel in March 2023.
Rene Antonio Melendez, 34, received a sentence of 252 months in federal prison from U.S. District Judge Diana Saldana after pleading guilty on June 29 to conspiracy to distribute fentanyl resulting in death.
The sentence will be followed by three years of supervised release.
According to federal prosecutors, investigators used cellphone records, text messages, witness interviews and historical cell-site data to connect Melendez to an $80 fentanyl transaction that preceded the victim’s death.
Man Found Unresponsive at Laredo Hotel in March 2023
The investigation began March 11, 2023, when law enforcement officers responded to a hotel in Laredo following a report of an unresponsive man.
The victim’s friend told authorities that the man had consumed a substance known as “White China” before he stopped breathing.
Investigators recovered a baggie containing fentanyl from the hotel room.
A subsequent examination by the medical examiner determined that the victim died from acute fentanyl toxicity.
Federal authorities did not disclose the victim’s identity or the name of the hotel where the overdose occurred.
Investigators Trace Fatal Fentanyl Purchase to San Bernardo Avenue
During the investigation, the victim’s friend told authorities he had driven the victim to a location off San Bernardo Avenue in Laredo to meet an unidentified individual.
Investigators reviewed text messages showing that the victim had arranged to purchase approximately $80 worth of drugs through Melendez.
According to prosecutors, Melendez directed the victim to the meeting location.
Authorities subsequently examined cellphone records, interviewed witnesses and analyzed historical cell-site information to determine who supplied the drugs.
The investigation established that Melendez was the individual who provided the fentanyl to the victim, according to federal prosecutors.
Text Messages Help Connect Defendant to Fatal Overdose
Federal investigators also identified additional communications between Melendez and the victim.
According to the prosecution, Melendez sent the victim a text message later that day asking about the drugs.
Shortly afterward, the victim’s friend called 911 to report that the man was no longer breathing.
The text messages, combined with witness statements and cellphone location evidence, helped investigators establish the sequence of events leading to the fatal overdose.
Authorities did not disclose the exact wording of the communications or specify whether the victim knew the substance contained fentanyl.
Federal Judge Imposes 252-Month Prison Sentence
Melendez pleaded guilty on June 29 to conspiracy to distribute fentanyl resulting in death.
U.S. District Judge Diana Saldana subsequently sentenced him to 252 months, or 21 years, in federal prison.
The sentence also includes three years of supervised release after his incarceration.
Unlike parole, federal supervised release is a period of court-ordered supervision that begins after a defendant completes a prison sentence.
Melendez has remained in federal custody and will continue to be detained pending transfer to a Federal Bureau of Prisons facility.
The specific federal prison where he will serve his sentence has not yet been determined.
Federal Prosecutors Pursue Accountability in Fentanyl Death
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Leslie Ann Cortez.
The conviction and sentence conclude the federal prosecution of Melendez for the fentanyl distribution conspiracy described by authorities.
