Johan Caballero

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — An 18-year-old man was arrested Tuesday night, October 20, 2026, after his former girlfriend was hospitalized with multiple stab wounds and two dogs were found shot to death inside an apartment in north Harris County, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO).

The suspect, Johan Caballero, 18, faces charges of aggravated assault involving family violence, violation of a protective order and animal cruelty.

The incident occurred in the 300 block of Highlands Cross Drive, near the North Freeway (Interstate 45) and FM 1960 Road West.

Investigators believe the stabbing and the deaths of the two dogs are connected. The sheriff’s office said its Domestic Violence and Animal Cruelty units are jointly investigating the case.

Deputies Discover Blood Leading Into Apartment

According to HCSO, deputies responded to a disturbance at an apartment complex on Highlands Cross Drive on Tuesday night.

When deputies arrived, they discovered a significant amount of blood leading into an apartment.

Concerned about what might have occurred inside, deputies forced entry into the residence.

During their search, officers discovered two deceased dogs with apparent gunshot wounds, along with a butcher knife.

The sheriff’s office did not disclose the breeds of the dogs, their ownership or whether a firearm was recovered at the scene.

Authorities also have not confirmed whether the butcher knife was the weapon used in the stabbing.

Woman Arrives at Hospital With Multiple Stab Wounds

Around the same time deputies were investigating the apartment, authorities learned that a woman had arrived at a nearby hospital suffering from multiple stab wounds.

Detectives connected the woman’s injuries to the disturbance at the apartment complex.

As the investigation progressed, authorities identified the woman’s former boyfriend, Caballero, as the alleged attacker.

The sheriff’s office did not release the woman’s identity, age or current medical condition.

Investigators also did not specify how she reached the hospital or whether anyone assisted her after the attack.

Suspect Detained After Arriving at Hospital

While deputies were at the hospital investigating the woman’s injuries, Caballero arrived at the facility.

Deputies detained him at the hospital.

Following the initial investigation, Caballero was arrested and charged with three offenses:

  • Aggravated Assault – Family Violence
  • Violation of a Protective Order
  • Animal Cruelty

Caballero, whose date of birth is December 30, 2007, was booked into the Harris County Jail.

Authorities did not disclose his bond amount or upcoming court dates.

The sheriff’s office also did not release details about the protective order, including when it was issued or the specific restrictions Caballero allegedly violated.

Domestic Violence and Animal Cruelty Investigators Working Together

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said its Domestic Violence and Animal Cruelty units are jointly investigating the incident.

Detectives are examining the circumstances surrounding the woman’s stabbing and the deaths of the two dogs.

The department emphasized that violence against animals can be associated with domestic abuse, particularly when pets are harmed as a means of threatening or intimidating a victim.

“Domestic violence is a serious and potentially deadly threat,” the sheriff’s office stated. “The intersection of domestic violence and animal cruelty is particularly troubling, as violence against pets can also be used to intimidate, threaten, or control victims.”

Investigators have not publicly established a motive for the attack or explained the sequence of events inside the apartment.

Authorities also have not announced whether additional charges are expected.
