Woman Seriously Injured After Jumping from Moving Vehicle in Harlingen

On Saturday, February 3, 2024, Cameron County Sheriff Deputies responded to a distress call at the intersection of FM 509 and Harrison Avenue in Harlingen, Texas. The call reported a female had jumped out of a moving vehicle.

Upon arrival, deputies found the victim with life-threatening injuries. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel attended to her before transporting her to the hospital. Witnesses informed authorities that the vehicle involved had left the scene.

After gathering statements from witnesses, deputies identified the vehicle and initiated a search. The driver, identified as 41-year-old Juan Antonio Hernandez, was located and detained within Harlingen city limits.

Hernandez admitted to deputies that he and the victim had been arguing while the vehicle was in motion. He claimed that the victim wanted to jump out and that he was unable to stop her in time. He admitted that he did not stop, fearing authorities would not believe him.

Hernandez was subsequently arrested and charged with Deadly Conduct. He is currently held at Carrizales Rucker Detention Center. The investigation into the incident continues, while the victim remains hospitalized with serious, life-threatening injuries.
