Threat to Public Safety: Helicopter Struck by Gunfire in Bastrop County

The Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a dangerous incident after a helicopter contracted by Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative was hit by gunfire during an aerial surveying mission on November 10, 2025.

The aircraft was gathering data in the southern part of the county near Red Rock and Rosanky, in the areas of FM 812, FM 535, and FM 20, when a bullet struck it from below. Deputies responded to the Smithville-Crawford Municipal Airport, where evidence confirmed the helicopter had been hit by a round fired upward from a high-powered firearm. The trajectory indicated the shot was aimed directly at the aircraft.

The two occupants were not injured, but investigators say the shot posed a severe risk to their lives. High-powered firearms carry enough force and penetration to cause catastrophic damage when misused.

The Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI have opened a joint investigation and are asking for the public’s help identifying the person responsible. Enhanced security measures will stay in place until the aerial work is complete or the shooter is located.

This offense falls under 18 U.S. Code § 32, which covers the destruction of aircraft or aircraft facilities and carries penalties of up to 20 years in federal prison, fines, or both.
