Second Suspect Arrested in 2025 Fatal Shooting on Sherwood Lane in Northwest Houston

A second suspect has been arrested and charged in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred in 2025 at 4603 Sherwood Lane, Houston police said.

Jose Cortez-Torres, 39, is charged with murder in the 209th Criminal District Court. He was arrested on January 2, 2026, by members of the Houston Police Department’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Detail and booked into the Harris County jail.

Another suspect, Octavio Garcia Cruz, 48, was previously arrested and charged with murder in the 184th Criminal District Court. Cruz was taken into custody on October 8, 2025, by HPD’s Gang Division Crime Reduction Unit and the Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force.

The victim has been identified as Angel Chavira, 35.

According to HPD Homicide Division Sergeant M. Holbrook and Detective R. Lujan, officers responded to a report of a shooting at an apartment complex at about 10:50 p.m. on July 5, 2025. The victim had been transported to a hospital by a private vehicle and was pronounced dead there.

Investigators said the victim was sitting outside his apartment with friends when two male suspects approached him. One of the suspects shot the victim multiple times before both suspects fled on foot in an unknown direction.

The investigation remains ongoing.
