Pedestrian Dies After Being Struck by Truck on Beaumont Highway

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas—A man who was kneeling or sitting in a lane of traffic died early Friday morning after being struck by a truck on Beaumont Highway.
At approximately 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 28, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office responded to a crash in the 16900 block of Beaumont Highway. Deputies found a Hispanic male who had been struck by a black 2020 GMC Sierra. The driver of the Sierra remained at the scene and reported the crash.
The driver told deputies he swerved to avoid the man, but the left front of his vehicle struck him. Deputies noted the area was dimly lit and that the man was not in a nearby crosswalk. They also observed that the man had a grocery bag containing several empty and one unopened can of Bud Light.
The man, who was conscious and talking to deputies, was transported to a local hospital for treatment of back pain. However, at approximately 1:50 a.m. on August 29, about four hours after the crash, hospital staff contacted the Sheriff’s Office to report he had died.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office Vehicular Crimes Division is now leading the investigation. The driver of the GMC Sierra was cooperative and showed no signs of intoxication. This is an open and ongoing investigation.
