New AFL Includes the Houston Roughnecks, XFL and USFL Announce Merger

In a groundbreaking move, the XFL and USFL officially announced their merger on Sunday, creating a new football powerhouse known as the United Football League (UFL). The UFL is set to feature eight teams, evenly split between the former XFL and USFL franchises, organized into two conferences.

USFL’s lineup includes the Birmingham Stallions, Houston Roughnecks (formerly known as the Houston Gamblers), Memphis Showboats, and Michigan Panthers. Meanwhile, the XFL contributes the Arlington Renegades, D.C. Defenders, San Antonio Brahmas, and St. Louis Battlehawks to the UFL roster.

The UFL’s regular season is scheduled to kick off on Saturday, March 30, 2024, promising fans an exciting 10-game series that brings together the strengths of both leagues. The merger aims to enhance the overall quality of football and create a more competitive landscape within the newly formed United Football League.
